With our move away from Anchorage AK, I had to say goodbye to my wonderful LYS, Far North Yarn. I did actually stop in to say goodbye and exchange contact info with Annie, the owner. I’ll be stalking the shop’s Facebook and Instagram, but sadly it won’t be my local anymore.
However, I’m in luck, because Fond du Lac has it’s own lovely LYS – Knitty Gritty!

It’s actually pretty close to our house, so I get can to it pretty easily. It’s in a strip mall with a few other stores, so lots of easy parking as well. The owner was very pleasant and friendly, and made me feel right at home.
Inside there is a good selection of yarn, books, needles and notions.

Lots of worked samples and project ideas are spread around the store as well, which I always like to see.

There is also a class/gathering area in the shop. They do hold classes on what looks like a pretty regular basis, and the owner told me they have a knit group every Tuesday morning! I’m glad they have some activities at the shop – that is a great way to get to know local fellow knitters.
We do have another yarn shop in town – Woolgatherers – but it seems entirely geared to weaving, so I’m not sure there there will be anything for me there at all. But I’m hoping to check that out over the next week or two.
What are things you look for in a LYS? Good selection, friendly staff, lots of activities?
Good news. Makes it feel more like home. Do you like the new location? Maybe too soon to know.

I really like our apartment! I wouldn’t want to be here forever, but it’s great as a foot on the ground. I do like Wisconsin so far. It’s not very different from PA, really.

My nephew lives in Wisconsin, about an hour from Madison. I was out in Green Bay for his wedding (like 25 years ago!) and it’s very similar to PA.

It is here too – rolling hills, lots of farms, nice towns, similar pace.

A LYS is always a good thing. I miss my LYS that closed down at the beginning of covid. Now I need to ‘plan’ if I want to go yarn shopping. Nothing close anymore. I have driven through Fond du Lac on my way to Appleton. I always liked the name and the meaning of it.

I’ve never had a LYS, in Dingwall we have a small shop that sells everything from shoes, granny style nighties, bags, socks, duvet covers, Weird Fish tops, cushions, yarn and small haberdashery. It’s such a random collection of things but the yarn section is minuscule and mostly acrylic.

Maybe that’s your fortune – open a good yarn shop in Dingwall! Do you have any in nearby towns?

I’d have to deal with customers so that’s a definite not for me. There’s one in Inverness 15 miles away but it’s not in a good spot for parking so haven’t been yet.

True. Maybe you can hire a people person to be the customer side of things and can just deal with ordering and accounts and making samples!

Looks like a wonderful place to drop in and knit at! And close to home is a bonus.

Yes, very true! I’m hoping to take advantage of the knitting group meetup one of these weeks!

That looks like a fun new LYS! That’s one of the things that I loved about moving as well—I discovered I was accidentally super close to the shop which had become my favorite yarn shop during the early days of the pandemic!

Lucky you, having a good yarn shop so close! That must help with settling in to your new place 😀
My LYS is very close, but when I tried the knit n natter group they were very cliquey so I don’t use it much. So I guess my requirement is friendly, inclusive people.
