Today I finished a project I have been working on for just a month short of 2 years.

The pattern is Alexandra’s Airplane Scarf. There are several versions of this scarf – this is the striped version. The yarn is Isager Japansk Bomuld, which is just a very thin cotton tape yarn. It has a papery, linen-y feel to it, and it pretty interesting to knit, if a little splitty. It is knit on US 8 needles, so it has a pretty open airy feel
The name comes from it being perfect airplane knitting. It is a fairly broad tube, and you are just knitting stockinette. Miles and miles of plain old stockinette. I’ve been working on it for so long because it is stunningly boring to knit. I’ve carried it along on car rides and knit on it while in conversations I wanted or needed to pay attention to. Just recently the last skein was finally winding down, which inspired me to just hurry up and get it done.
However, now that it is done I think it will be a nice summer scarf. It is pretty lightweight, and I still like the colors π So there is that.
What is your longest running WIP? And also why is it your longest running WIP?
Nice colours you chose for it. My longest WIP is making the 2nd mitten from the kit I bought when the two of us went to Loop together. Was that 2023 or 2024? Itβs neglected because I worry the mitten that is finished is a bit snug and knitting with lace weight yarn in colourwork is slooooowww. Iβm just after quicker wins right now.

Thank you! Mittens with laceweight yarn do take a long time for sure!!

Nice scarf! A summer scarf? How cool are your summers?!?! π
Longest WIP is currently an English Paper Piecing hand sewing hexagon project that I started in 2016.

LOL! You make a good point – it’s probably more going to be for late spring/early fall when it’s a bit cooler than it is now.
That has been in the works for a while. But I know it will be amazing when you are done with it!

That’s a really neat looking scarf! I’ve always wanted to knit something in that ribbon-type yarn, but haven’t done it yet.
Technically, my longest-running WIP is a cross stitch piece that I started over 20 years ago. It got packed up when I moved a while back, and I didn’t re-find it until I moved semi-recently. It’s a big and detailed piece, so it’s going to require a lot of focus to figure out where I am and all that before I can re-start it, but I hope to do that this year sometime.
Of my active WIPs, though, my longest-running is the mitered square blanket I’m knitting out of scrap sock yarn. It was always planned to be a long-term project, so I don’t feel like I’m “behind” on it.

Thank you! It is different to knit, mostly because I felt like I needed to keep untwisting it so it would stay mostly flat.
It’s great that you rediscovered your cross stitch piece! I’m interested to see and read about your process for picking it back up. I have a few half done embroidery pieces in my storage that may make it back out into the light someday.
Those scrap blankets don’t really count – they just get done as yarn and time become available π

Good point… scrap blankets are meant to take a long time (at least in my mind) so that new yarns from a wide period of time can get added as other projects are finished!
I’ll try to remember to document my re-starting process for my cross stitch WIP when I get there. First I need to finish my current cross stitch piece, though…
