Yardening

All of a sudden, things are getting done at my house! At least outside of it. We discovered that we have violets growing all over our yard, giving us lovely little purple and white flowers.

When we bought the house, it had a rotting old wooden patio outside the back door. We had a contactor lined up to get rid of that and pour concrete at some point in June. He had a surprise opening in his schedule, and we got our new patio this week!

A week or two ago we bought some trees and set up with a landscaper to come and plant them for us at some point – they got here today! We got a little pine for our front yard and a little Honeycrisp apple tree for the back yard. They are little now, but we are looking forward to seeing them grow.

And finally, I got a nice birdbath and a paving stone to put it on. The copper one on a stick that was constantly tilted one way or another is going to be repurposed elsewhere in the yard.

I am also planning to do something about the one bird feeder that is tilted. It got that way because the squirrels go running at it and hit it at full speed to get up to the dish and hanging feeders. They are constantly knocking it askew!

We also got some planting boxes built and I hope to get some veggies planted next week!

Do you have anything going on in your yard yet? Or waiting for it to get a little warmer?

  1. Honeycrisp apple trees are a not self pollinating variety so hopefully you have another apple tree of another variety within 50’ of it or you won’t see any apples from it. You maybe already have apple trees that were there when you moved in but thought I should mention in case you don’t and then were expecting fruit. Having the patio will be great as it warms up. I bet it’s entertaining watching those squirrels charge around, naughty squirrels knocking your birdbath though.

    1. We do have a gnarly old apple tree near the new one that produces a lot of gnarly apples. We are leaving it up so that it can cross-pollinate with our new tree, and also the deer LOVE the apples from the old tree. Neighbors told us the old tree had a lot of sentimental value for the previous owner as well.
You are right, the squirrels are naughty, but they are so cute! A wonky bird feeder is a small price to pay 🙂

  2. You’ve been busy! I’ve been trying to line up a contractor to put tile on my front porch stoop and it’s like pulling teeth. No, worse. I could get an appointment to get a tooth pulled but not one with a contractor. They are like hen’s teeth! Love the crooked birdfeeder. Ours always end up that way!

    1. We have been! And there will be more soon – the contractor left the yarn pretty torn up, so we will have some fixing to do. Might do a few more yard things before we are done for the year 🙂

  3. I’m happy to see that you are planting trees. As for me, I made a quick report yesterday with six or so photographs of my plants. Today I will be planting annuals in the flower beds.
