Swatching Struggle Bus

The struggle is real!

I have been swatching to get ready for the MKAL part of Kate Davies’ Summer of Mystery club, and I can not find a yarn combination I love enough to use.

I am trying to use KDD Millarochy Tweed, hopefully using stock on hand. These are the combinations I tried. The middle one on the left was such a hard no I didn’t even finish the swatch. The top row and middle right are just mehs. The bottom two are not bad, but I really just don’t love any of them…

The swatching continues.

Have you had any projects that you just had a really hard time putting together yarn for? Did you just keep trying things, or pass on the project?

  1. Have you tried on your iPad cropping a photo of each colour and moving them about to see which combo looks good in colour and black and white and then knitting it to be sure? Just an idea that may be quicker? I need to decide what colours to do the golden fern pattern with along with my main maroon colour, but I’ve not even started swatching for that yet.

  2. That hasn’t happened to me. Usually I work out my yarn combinations and THEN go find a pattern to suit the palette. Have you tried auditioning your yarns by winding them on a craft stick? I have seen this technique suggested by various instructors, including Kate Davies (I believe.)

  3. I have not started swatching yet but my head is spinning with options! I don’t have enough Millarochy to do the shawl and not sure I want to add to my stash – the struggle is real 😂

  4. Yes! I’m in love with a 3 color combo that I’ve used from Knit Picks, but one of the colors is discontinued. I wanted to do a second design with those colors.

I bought a different color to swap in, but every time I look at it, I decide to work on something else. Meh.
