On the Mend

Tonight I did something I rarely do – mended some socks. These socks have been laying around waiting for me to either fix them or throw them away for months now. But it’s finally done!

This one had an area that was wearing very thin, to the point it was going to develop a hole if I wore them one more time. I just duplicate stitched over the thin part and surrounding area. Believe it or not, the mending yarn is leftover from knitting the sock!

These poor sad things had a hole and some thin spots, so I took a mixed approach. I wove a patch with one of those little weaving looms over the hole, and duplicate stitched over the thin parts. I just used the same yarn because I couldn’t be bothered to find the leftover yarn from these socks, though I know it’s somewhere in my stash.

Anyway, it’s done, and I now have a little more room in my coffee table drawer!

Do you ever mend socks? Do you like visible mending, or prefer to try to make it as invisible as possible?

  1. I have to admit I never mend my socks. Wearing through them to me is like a good excuse to get new sockyarn and knit 😉
Nice job though, and I love that coloured sock ! Which pattern did you use for it ?

  2. These fixes turned out great! I want to try visible mending next time I have something that needs to be fixed, but I’ve always gone for “invisible” mending before. (And sometimes it actually does manage to be hard to spot the fix. Though not usually.)

      1. I’m thinking that’s how I’m going to patch my jeans next time I have a pair that needs mending! Since usually jeans wear out in a couple of places but are otherwise still in good condition. It feels a waste to not mend them.
