Only Murders On this Blog

DH and I were just off for a short getaway, so while I do have knitting news to report, it’s not photo-ready quite yet. What I did want to talk about is a show I have been watching and book I recently read.

If you like cozy mysteries, true crime podcasts, and/or New York, you will want to watch Only Murders In the Building. It stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez – they all do an amazing job, as do all the other side characters and people with cameos (like Sting!) The three live in the same apartment building in New York, and there is a murder. They bond over their mutual love of the same true crime podcast and decide to investigate the murder. And do a podcast about it, naturally.

This was such a fun ride! There are twists and turns, the characters develop and reveal secrets of their own while building a real friendship. I loved every minute of it, and was thrilled to hear season 2 is in the works. You can see the trailer here if you want an idea of the tone of it. A word of warning, there is some adult language and situations. There is some violence, though it isn’t gory or explicit. So if you are sensitive to that type of thing, you don’t want to watch this one.

The other cozy murder-related fun thing I’ve experienced lately is Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village by Maureen Johnson and Jay Cooper.

There’s not a lot of depth here, but it is a fun and affectionate spoof of British cozy murder mysteries. The illustrations complement the text nicely, and add to the humor. The illustrations are sort of a cross between Edward Gorey and James Thurber, so I quite enjoyed them. They may or may not be your cup of tea (which has been poisoned by the vicar) 😉

Have you read or watched anything good lately? Do tell!

  1. I’ve been thinking that I should watch that show… I noticed lately that it has a really high rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I’m so glad that you liked it and now I’ve added it to my list of shows. I just love a good murder mystery show! I’ve been hanging on waiting for Yellowstone to return but now I have this. 🙂
