I’m taking a few classes at this weekend’s Vogue Knitting Live, and I had a little homework for one of them. The class is on mattress stitching, and asks you to do swatches ahead of time. 2 or 4 like the square one, and one of the triangle. The square swatches have me a bit puzzled – not sure why we’re not just doing plain stockinette? But OK, I guess.

Class reports on Sunday!
Maybe it’s slightly different to seam up stockinette vs garter? I’ve only done one seamed sweater so I can’t remember

Maybe! It just seems odd to have 4 swatches like that. Most of the sweaters I’ve made have been seemed, and you’re normally sewing like to like. But all will be revealed soon enough!

I love the mattress stitch. I recently worked on garter stitch seams and it was so magical.

I’m looking forward to the class! I mostly just backstitch sweater pieces together, but it will be interesting to learn this method 🙂

You will love the results because after you get the hang of the technique, it produces a pretty seamless appearance that is a joy to behold.

I have only mattress stitched maybe once or twice; I even had taken a private lesson at a SF LYS for it. I can’t remember what project it was for though. Hmmm…

Oh I know what I had used it for! I made a shrug that was a rectangle and had to mattress stitch the sides to make arms.
