Yarn shop review

Two Yarn Shops and a Winery

I am delighted to report I have been on a few yarn-related mini-adventures over the last week since I posted! Last Saturday, DH and I drove the the sort-of-nearby Wollersheim Winery, Distillery, and Bistro. Wollersheim has a wine that I do like and buy somewhat frequently. The last time I got some, the cashier gushed about her recent visit to the winery and made it sound pretty good. Reader, she was not exaggerating. It’s a pretty winery, with lots of places to drink some wine or spirits, a bistro to snack in, and many opportunities to shop. We started out in the bistro and had some pretty good gyros. Then on to the wine shop! You could pay to taste 5 different wines, which seemed like a pretty good bargain. The lady doing the wine “tour” we were on was very knowledgeable, and was not shy about crossing stuff off on our pick lists and suggesting other wines to try. After I tried one dry red wine (my least favorite category, but I thought I should try at least one), she saw my face and crossed out a blush I had on the list. After a few questions, she replaced my pick with one that I loved. We wound up buying a case of wine!

Coincidentally, there is a yarn shop in that same town! ( I definitely don’t steer mini-adventures near to any possible yarn shops!) (Or do I?) So I also got to Flaxen Fleece, which is a very nice yarn shop with lots of interesting yarns, books, sundries, and tools. It’s very spacious and very cozy to visit. There were people sitting at a table visiting and knitting, and the lady on staff was knowledgeable and friendly. I bought just a few items – some yarn to make socks for DH and a little shawl kit!

Then later in the week, I found out that a new knit shop/cafe had opened somewhat recently in the nearby town of Princeton Wi. And the next morning, we were there! It is a pretty close town, and has a great bakery. Sadly, the bakery was closed, but that was probably better for my desperate attempts at weight loss. Anyway, we visited UnWound, a smaller shop with a little more limited stock. That link goes to their Facebook page, as they don’t really have a website per se. They had a lot of KnitPicks yarn, which I had never seen in a store before. They also had a LOT of supplies, books and yarn for making Amigurumi. Like, a LOT. If you want to make any type of tiny crocheted creature, they have got you covered.

In addition to yarn, books, and tools, they have a coffee bar and some really lovely spaces to sit and sip or craft. Another great feature of their shop is that there is a small river running behind it, and the sitting areas at the back look out over it. I do love a water view, so that is a pretty big draw for me.

I am glad to have gotten to check out these two new-to-me stores! UnWound is the closest yarn shop to me physically and they have pretty good hours, so I will definitely be visiting them often. Flaxen Fleece is a pretty long drive from here, but if we are out that way again I would definitely stop in there again!

Have you gotten to visit any new craft (or other interesting) shops recently? What was it like and did you find anything you wanted?
