We are supposed to get down below freezing tonight for the first time this year! I had the vague sense that we still had a few veggies out there, so went out to take one last look before it was too late. It’s a good thing I checked – we would have missed out on some good produce. That’s a pretty good haul for late October!
There are still some green tomatoes out there that were too green to bring in. I did grab some that were starting to turn and will just set them near a window for a few day, but I think the rest are a lost cause.
Overall this was a good year for the garden. I did learn some lessons that will come in handy for next year, so I need to remember to write them down in the garden journal!
For those of you that garden, do you still have any veggies coming in? Or have the plants died off where you are?
Do you make fried green tomatoes? Pretty tasty!

I haven’t so far! Do you have a recipe you like best?

I fry them like my grandma did. Mix flour and cornmeal and seasoning. Just salt and pepper is fine. Slice the tomatoes and cover them in the dry mix. Fry in hot oil until golden brown.
I think some people batter them. Iโve never tried that.

We had a frost about 2 weeks ago so that ended gardening for the year. Our local farm stand just carries pumpkins and squash this time of year.

That’s all I am seeing out at the local ones too ๐

I used my green tomatoes for green-tomato mincemeat for pie filling.
You can also cut them up and fry them as a side dish.

I don’t have a garden right now, but I do remember in the past there being produce that I hadn’t realized was growing because it was late in the season and I had stopped hovering over the plants by then. ๐

Exactly! I stopped checking every day because of how late in the season it is

Good thing you did a final check before winter, though!

There are some cherry tomatoes out there, taunting me! I need to pick them, and pull up the plants. But not right nowโฆ

I picked them this afternoon before making dinner! Very sweet because theyโve been hanging out there past ripe!

Thanks for sharing your last Ag report of the season. I was in the same boat with tomatoes at the end – sort of heart breaking all those green tomatoes that did not get to ripen. I thought about bringing them in and trying the paper bag trick in a dark cabinet to get them to ripen but decided to just let them compost. I had some basil hanging on but then we were hit with a freeze. I still have rosemary and parsley that I can use but better use soon!

You had great success with your garden this year! Fresh herbs are so delicious ๐ Do you bring herbs in to grown indoors over winter?

Thank you and I did not. I just buy fresh herbs as needed in the winter. ๐
