For years, I have wanted a yarn winding station. Somewhere I could set up my swift and winder and just leave them up. But it just hasn’t been practical for one reason or another. But finally, my yarn winding dreams have come true!

Ta Da!! Recently I was thinking about maybe getting a sawhorse of some kind and using that for the winding station. So I was poking around on Pinterest looking for ideas, as one does, and saw someone else had something similar to this. They said they had used a trestle from Ikea. I searched Ikea’s website and found this model, which is the Mittback.
However, just the trestle does not work. The top piece is not long enough to have the components separated so they don’t whack into each other during winding, and also the clamps don’t work correctly due to the spacing. So my DH did some measurements, got the longer board you see here, screwed it fast to the top, and voila!!
It works perfectly! It’s fairly lightweight so I can carry it to other rooms easily if I want to. The top piece is adjustable so it can be raised if needed. In short, I could not be happier with this new piece of equipment. Here it is with the swift open!

And now, please excuse me – I need to wind some yarn!
Congratulations!!!

Ingenious; that looks great!
I have my swift at one end of a 3 foot bookshelf, and the winder at the other end. Just enough space for winding. The bookshelf is one of those slide together models; it’s only about 3 feet tall. It’s at a right angle to my desk, next to the desk chair.

That looks awesome! I’ve been using my sit/stand desk for winding because I can raise it up… and now I can’t imagine having a winding spot that doesn’t raise. Good thinking on adding that feature to yours!

Thank you! Being able to raise and lower it is pretty important for sure. It’s something I wanted forever, so glad I found that trestle. Your sit/stand desk is a great idea!

The only problem is I have to move or cover EVERYTHING if I’m winding a yarn that’s even slightly fuzzy!
