Anniversary Adventures: Part 1

Last week DH and I went on two short trips to check out different areas of Wisconsin. Our first destination was Wisconsin Dells! Wisconsin Dells is an area with some lovely natural features – specifically the Wisconsin river has carved its way down through the local sandstone bedrock to create beautiful cliffs and dells. In recent years, a lot of water parks and so on have been built in the area, though we didn’t visit any of those.

Our first day there we visited a historical site devoted to H.H. Bennett, who was a photography pioneer and helped make the Dells famous. After that, we took a river cruise!

That evening we ate at Hot Rocks, a tiki bar that brings your food to you on burning hot rocks for you to cook for yourself. It was more fun than it sounds like it would be.

Our hotel room overlooked the Wisconsin river, so we had a beautiful view.

Day 2, we took a duck boat tour of a different part of the river, then visited a deer park where I got to feed and pet different kinds of deer. That was amazing – they are such beautiful creatures, and I would have stayed there all day if I could have!

And then we finished of the day with dinner at an awesome supper club, Ishnala! Supper clubs are kind of old fashioned restaurants that are designed to be a little more leisurely. Ishnala is on a lake shore, and while you are waiting for your table you can get a drink at one of their several bars and sit in lounge chairs by the lake or in the woods around the restaurant. It was an awesome experience!

Do you like to do little getaways of a couple days, or prefer longer trips? Or no travel at all? Do tell!

  1. I like the short getaways. Enough to disconnect but not enough to worry about cats, work (when I was working) and other stuff. I took a month long trip to Hawaii when I was younger. Although I loved it, I was ready to get back. This sounds like a great trip. Food and river trips. How great is that?

  2. I like both kinds of trips! I partly depends on where we’re going, honestly.

I’m familiar with a supper club as a literal club… my grandparents were apparently part of a supper club back in the day. My mom talks about how they used to take turns hosting dinner parties. (This was all way before I was born, but it sounds like a fun idea!)

  3. What a lovely trip and such fabulous weather you had. I like any sort of trip, when our dog was younger I liked long weekends camping, or pre-dog weeekends away, but I love longer trips too. The longest trip I went on was 47 nights when I went to Peru, Bolivia and Costa Rica back to back and that was an amazing time. So any length trip I’m happy with.

  4. I’ve been to the Dells! I went with John on his business trip a couple years ago and I primarily remember chlorine soaked children running about the hotel – ha! Yes a lot of indoor waterparks! They are kind of cool and we did have a lovely dinner somewhere with some of the best meatloaf and mashed potatoes – very comforting meal! Enjoyed your photos from your getaway and happy anniversary! I like short getaways.

    1. Oh very cool! I believe you about the chlorine soaked kids šŸ™‚ That does sound like a nice meal – if you remember where, please let me know! I think we will be going back šŸ™‚ Thank you! Short getaways are a lot less pressure than long trips.
