Yarn shop review

Yarn Crawl!

Yesterday DH and I participated in the Wandering Ewe Southeast Wisconsin Yarn Crawl! He is not a knitter, but was my designated driver. Everyone he said that to nodded and said “Yarn fumes”.

There are 7 shops involved in the crawl – we went to 3 of them, which is fine for one day 🙂 The others were in central Milwaukee, which we are not quite ready for yet. But I will get to them one day! Anyway, our first stop was Fox River Fibers. The outside doesn’t look that exciting, but the inside sure is! I was too excited to take an interior picture. I had settled down a little by the next stop.

They are a really nice shop with a great array of both local dyers and more commonly available yarns. Lots of Madelinetosh, lots of other big brands. They had a few crawl specials – a few giveaways, and a trunk show by a dyer who works in the shop, Critical Sheep! I bought a couple of local dyer skeins here, and also got a yarn crawl tote bag from the last crawl, which the shop had labeled “heritage collectibles”!

Our second stop was Knitch Yarns in Delafield. This is a cute shop in a cute downtown. Lots of nice yarns here. They didn’t focus as much on local yarns as the first shop, but did have a trunk show from a local dyer, Magically Dyed Yarns. They also had a Doodle card bar set up, and also had a Berrocco trunk show going. They had also created a lot of small kits just for the crawl, so they had a great selection!

Our last stop was Firefly Fibers, which is the closest to us. I haven’t been there before, because they have kind of goofy hours so I just haven’t made it there. They do have a great selection of Harrisville yarns, including Nightshades, which I love. Also a lot of Brooklyn Tweed, Berocco and other brands. They didn’t have anything particularly local, but I did get a miniskein set from Spun Right Round and a skein of Julie Asselin because I hadn’t tried it before.

So we got to visit a few towns we hadn’t been to before, I got to check out some new-to-me yarn shops, and I got a few new skeins. All in all, a pretty good Saturday!
