Baking Experiment: Chocolate Cake

In my ongoing quest to figure out how to bake, I have set myself the task of baking 1 pie and 1 cake each month, trying different techniques and recipes over time. This month it was time to try out chocolate cake! The last time I tried this type of cake was kind of a disaster, so I was a little nervous. I read through a bunch of recipes and settled on this one. Really I should have looked for a regular chocolate cake recipe, but I just realized I don’t have normal cake pans. So bundt it is!

Anyway, it turned out well! The only substitution I made was that I did not have buttermilk, so I did the replacement trick of adding a tablespoon of lemon juice to regular milk and letting it thicken a bit. It worked out fine. I also threw in a half teaspoon of espresso powder I have on hand. It has a good chocolate flavor and is very moist. My brother and sister-in-law were visiting, and they gave it two thumbs up as well. I didn’t get a picture of it before we started eating, hence the partial cake.

I also did have to make it in my Halloween Haunted Mansion cake tin as it is the only one I have with the capacity for this recipe. Oh well – it is a tasty cake all the same!

I don’t know what the next baking experiment should be – something different from what I’ve done, but not too difficult… Any suggestions?

  1. Well my goodness, that looks moist and delicious. Have you made hand pies yet? That would be a fun pie to try. Smitten Kitchen has a very good banana cake with chocolate frosting that is so good when I think about it I start to look to see if we have the ingredients.

  2. That looks yummy! My biggest problem with Bundt cake pans is that they take up so much space. I’ve been considering the idea of learning to make a pound cake, but I don’t know if that’s something that interests you. One bonus is that it uses a loaf pan and not a cake tin, so you might not need to buy new kitchen supplies just yet.
