Of the many, many things we need to update in our house, the stairs have been bugging me the most. Here’s why:

We finally got started on them this week! We have the carpet pulled up from one flight, but still have one flight to go. And, as you can see, some scraping. But at least it’s nice wood underneath!

Then we’ve got to decide what to do with them. Probably stain the steps and put up tiles on the risers? Don’t know yet, but at least it’s a start!
Do you have any home DIY projects going on?
Wow! Thatβs so exciting! I suppose you could also paint the risers. I canβt wait to see what you decide!

I wish they were going on. Mostly they are just “get to it someday” projects.

We have a lot of those!

It will be wonderful when it’s done. We put a carpet runner on our steps going to the second floor. The stairs to the basement came with that flat multicolor carpet that people used in basements many years ago. Too many other things to worry about that. Some day I may remove and just paint them. Easier to clean (especially hairballs!).

Yes for sure! I’d take paint over carpet for stairs any time!

Stair runners are back over here. There’s some really jazzy ones, I’ll send a link for reference not a suggestion you import it π

I would appreciate that! Thanks π

It really is! We tried taking up the stair carpet in our house in Anchorage and the steps were particle board on plywood. So we put it right back down again.

I actually miss having carpet on my stairs. Sure, wood stairs are easier to clean, but I have a habit of walking around wearing just socks on my feet, and man! Wood stairs can be slippery when you’re just wearing socks. I’ve had to get extra slippers so that I have a pair for every season to give myself some traction on the stairs.
(That said, I would have wanted to replace the carpet you had on your stairs, too. It looked in need of a refresh, at minimum.)

Oh they covered that lovely wood with that carpet? Well it might have been quite the fashion at the time they did it. I can imagine how much work it was to pull up the carpet but it will so be worth it when you get done with your stairs.
I think after the clean up you should consider staining them and then putting those safety rubber treads in the center of the risers.

I’m pretty sure from the style it was the 70s, and shag carpet was definitely the fashion! I think you are right – that will be a good way to have it look nice and still be safe. We do use the stairs a lot, so want to be careful about it being too slippery!

We had a house with 70s decor etc when we lived in Seattle – it took a couple years but we got it just how we wanted it. You aren’t going to believe your house in 5 years – enjoy the journey as you make it yours π
