Let the Yardening Begin!

It was a gorgeous day here, and even though it’s really too early to start, we have begun getting the yard and garden ready for summer! We went to Lowe’s yesterday for lumber to build garden boxes, and some plants accidentally fell in the cart. Well, what are you going to do? So they came home with us.

Today I had all kinds of indoor plans, but did none of them. Instead I raked leaves and sticks and debris off of the yard, planted a few plants, and did some general tidying up. Debris pile! This is from about half of the back yard. Still more raking to do.

Planted some flowers – some in a bed and some in containers for the front porch.

And I started setting out some garden accessories I bought over the winter – Bee Cups. They are little water cups for bees and other pollinators to drink from. They probably aren’t really necessary, but they are cute. And I like to think I’m helping out the bees in some way šŸ™‚

It is too early to be planting, but I did notice it isn’t going to be close to freezing overnight for the next week or so. So hopefully this gamble will pay off!

Are you doing any gardening this year? If so, are you ready to start planting, or waiting a bit?

  1. I’m trying to get my little yard in order this year. (I meant to last year, but other new-house stuff took priority.) First order of business is taking out the mismash of “plants to make the yard look good” that the seller put in. Second is replacing the sprinkler system with a drip system. And then finally, I want to put in a local plant pollinator / hummingbird garden. It’s going to be a lot of work, so I don’t expect to get it exactly the way I want it for a while. Still, fun stuff!

I wonder how the bee cups work—though they look cute!

    1. I absolutely get you there – so much to do setting up a house! Setting up a yard is also a lot of work, especially if you have pretty significant changes to make. It will be worth it though!
I’m wondering too. It sounds sensible, and they are cute. I’m going to see if I notice any bees or other insects making use of them before I invest in any others.

  2. Okay, thought #2 about bee cups. My parents have a habit of putting sticks in their bird bath, because the local bees want to get a drink and otherwise some bees will fall into the bird bath and have trouble getting out. So I guess the bee cups (as long as they collect water nicely) will be a safer option than a bird bath.

    1. That is a great idea! I never thought of that, but it is an easy way to help out the bees for sure. The bee cups do hold water nicely. I filled them up yesterday when watering and they all had a reasonable amount in them. Now – we wait for bees!

  3. Bee cups! That is awesome! You are looking out for your pollinators. Pretty exciting getting started on the garden – imagine what your containers will look like in a couple months! I started last week with some weeding in the front bed and adding soil to it. I also planted some summer bulbs. Can’t wait till May where I can get serious about the garden in Colorado šŸ™‚
