One of the great things about our new house is the yard. It is pretty vast for a house in a town. I am plotting and planning for some gardening, but that is a next year thing. What I can do right now is set up some bird feeders!
I love feeding and watering birds, but wasn’t really able to do that at our last house. So it’s been a llooooooong time (15 years!) since I’ve been able to put up bird feeders. I may be going a little crazy with it, but here is the current set up. I’m trying out different feeders and types of feed to see what is popular with the local feathered friends.
I also have plans to get a bigger bird bath. By the time we got moved in and organized enough to go look for feeders, the baths were all put away until next gardening season. So we’ll make do with this one for now.
I also put out corn on cobs for the squirrels – we seem to have two living in the trees in our yard, though it’s hard to tell with squirrels. So far they have been leaving the bird food alone, so I’m happy to feed them too, especially if it keeps them away from the feeders.
Do you put out bird food? What does your feeder situation look like?
I put up my “heated” bird bath this past weekend. It’s electric and the birds love it especially during the cold winter when small water pools are frozen. I feed the squirrels too but you have far more feeders than I do. I had a lot at the last house but here I wanted to keep it simple. I put the suet out for the winter and will wait for spring to do the sunflower seeds again.

Ooooo – heated bird bath! I have to look into that. I don’t know that I will keep all these feeders – will have to see who is around most of the time. I see a lot of little birds – finches and so on. So we will see š

The heated birdbath is worth it. Love to watch them during the winter. I have mostly cardinals, finches, chickadees and small woodpeckers at my feeders. Crows share the corn with the squirrels. Here with a walk out basement, it’s harder than the last house. I have the bird bath on the deck and the winter suet feeder too. I don’t go “down” to fill the feeders especially with it’s snowy so I’ve tried to make the deck more bird friendly (and they have rewarded me with bird poop on my deck! š )

LOL! Gifts from your feathered friends!
Sounds like you have a really nice setup for watching them š

I have a hummingbird feeder that gets a lot of use (from birds… so far no bugs, knock on wood). I also have a decent sized bird bath, but it gets more use as a squirrel drinking fountain. In the early summer I saw morning doves drink there too, but I’ve only seen one bird actually bathing in it. š
I’ve been considering getting a Bird Buddy, even though I know that with the small enclosed space I have available, it would ALSO become a Squirrel Buddy. Still. It might be worth it.

I keep thinking about a Bird Buddy too! Even with the occasional squirrel, it would be nice to be able to see who is visiting!
Do you have a lot of hummingbirds in your area? I’m not sure if we do here. I’ll have to read up on that š

We either have a lot of hummingbirds, or a couple of very frequent visitors! I can’t get close enough without scaring them to pick out markings. I know there’s at least two, though, based on size.

Yes, we are avid bird watchers, feeders and waterers! Who has dined at your new feeders so far?

So far a lot of different types of finches, some jays, and other ones that I don’t know what they are. I really need to find my bird book and keep it by the window!

We swear by Sibley’s. All the drawings in the books are done by him.

I’ll have to look for that!

Congratulations on room for bird feeders, I used to have them at my home in Oregon (a lot as my late husband was really into feeding the birds) and I would laugh as I saw neighborhood cats hanging out at the base of the feeders, oh my! I think you are going to have so much fun at your new house and gardening will be awesome!

I really hope so! It’s nice to see the birds out there, and I have big gardening plans š

We have our bird feeders tucked away in a corner under some tall shrubs to keep the pigeons and crows out, so we mostly get lots of different tits (chickadees?), a woodpecker, sparrows and goldfinches.
