Yesterday was the kickoff of our local winter carnival, Fur Rondy (short for Rondezvous), so Dave (DH) and I went downtown to take in some of fun. Every year we go to the parade, where our big occupation is counting the beauty queens. This year there were 41!
When we first got here, we were confused by this, because we were just thinking there should be one Miss Alaska, and then there you go. But no. There are queens of all the little towns, and then various civic organization crown their own too. And then some of them have a Miss, a Mrs, and a senior level of each. This makes for a lot of ladies in tiaras, fur coats and sashes waving regally to the crowds. But anyway, Dave has a lot of fun counting them each year. Here are some, but by no means all, of the Miss Alaskas we saw yesterday…
There are all kinds of other activities associated with Rondy – snow block carving, fireworks, a carnival with rides, a frostbite footrace, and much, much more. It’s a good time, and we had a nice day downtown enjoying our local wackiness. The festivities continue through the week, and next Saturday is the start of the Iditarod! We will be heading back downtown for that as well.
I did get some knitting in on my cowl last night, but decided I didn’t like what I had done, so ripped back a bit. Planning to try something a little different on it today, so we shall see how that goes.
How is your weekend going?
That looks like so much fun! What a beautiful sunny day too:)

It is super fun! Yes, we moved here from eastern PA about 11 years ago or so. It is a very beautiful place – we love it!

Where’s Miss Knitting Alaska? I’ve dreamed of getting to Alaska to visit, one of these days I am doing it! I should have come when I had my husky, but that was 20, um, 30? years ago?
