This past week I went to Seward, AK for work, and managed to squeeze in a visit to one of my favorite yarn shops in AK – A Flyin’ Skein! This is a pretty good yarn shop – certainly pretty amazing for being in a small town – with great stock and a friendly proprietress.
She has a good stock of mainstream yarn – lots of Cascade, Elsebeth Lavold, Malabrigo, Plymouth, Universal, and much more. She stocks plain workhorse yarns as well as fancy novelty yarns. There are plenty of tools and needles as well. In addition to yarn and yarn-related items, she also has a very good stock of tatting supplies and a smattering of other craft supplies.
So plenty of yarn and supplies you could get anyplace. What else? She also has quiviut – a specialty of Alaska – and her own hand-dyed yarn! Her house line of yarn is named Sheep Shades. She has several colorways in a variety of yarn weights. For my own souvenir skeins, I chose Beach Glass and Forget-Me-Not – the two blue-based colorways to the right of the picture.
For anyone who will be visiting Seward, A Flyin’ Skein is about a block away from the Sealife Center, which is also an amazing destination, but not a yarn-related one. A Flyin’ Skein has a Facebook page and a Ravelry group, as well as a website. So plenty of places to get information on hours and address. If you are heading to Seward – and if not, why not? It’s a great little town! – Definitely plan a stop at A Flyin’ Skein. You’ll be glad you did!
