I’m getting ready for Sarah at mildlygranola‘s Rainbow sock KAL next month by fishing around in my stash for skeins that will do. I don’t have any self-striping rainbow, but I do have some rainbow variegated sock yarns.
The top skein is Radioactive Rainbow from Knitted Wit. I have seen it knitted up, and it comes out kind of jittery, but with a rainbow vibe. The bottom skein is one from one of my favorite dyers – she closed up shop a couple years ago, and I have been reluctant to knit with my skeins from her. But realistically, I have a ton of her yarn and do need to start doing something with it. I suspect this will come out mostly blue with rainbow streaks throughout.
Any opinions? I genuinely cannot decide!

I didn’t about a KAL on Sarah’s blog, I’m wondering if I’ve missed a post. I like both your skeins but the bottom one is perhaps more likely to give you a rainbow stripe look.

I’m having a baking day today but have undyed yarn and plenty of acid dyes so next week I will have a go at dyeing my first self stripe attempt in rainbow colours. No socks on the needles at the moment so that will be good to use.

It depends what pattern you are planning to use. The top one would suit a plainer pattern whereas you could have more stitch pattern with the bottom one.

I love both of those yarns. Both will give you socks that “pop”! If I had to choose, I would probably pick the one on the bottom. Can’t wait to see the finished product. 🙂

My personal thought is; the bottom skeins colors would flow more gently into each other. Like a true rainbow would.

That is very true. It won’t be striped, but it would be more rainbow-looking.

I do the same thing with special yarn that I can’t get any more:) I think you should use the special yarn. Make it a celebration what with it being a KAL:)
You all are making me want to dig out some rainbow yarn and join in. I might. I’m sure there is rainbow yarn in my stash:) It will put me over my 3 project limit but 4 is doable particularly where the Arachne won’t be needed until mid September:)

Yay rainbow socks! They would both look awesome. I feel like if you use the bottom one you might want to do something a bit more fancy! I made rainbow stripey socks with little rainbows on them a while back – https://www.ravelry.com/projects/BackstageKatKnits/rainbow-socks
and I will totally be joining in on this! I think I might be out of rainbow yarn but that just means I have an excuse to buy more!!

I like both but for a true rainbow probably the bottom, personally for socks I would go top and use the bottom for a scarf. Will be beautiful either way 👌 🌈

I vote for Radioactive Rainbow using the pattern Rainbow Connection Socks by Kay LItton (The Crazy Sock Lady), you would need a mini skein of black yarn. It’s an amazingly beautiful pattern.
