To Goal or Not to Goal

That is the question.

Earlier today I was looking over my projects from the year, and comparing them to the goals I set for myself for 2018.  I will be writing up a final reckoning a little later this month, but the short answer is – I did hit most of them, but missed on a few. But then I did do a couple of other things that weren’t accounted for in my goals, mostly because I didn’t know they were going to be a thing.

And that will always be true.  There will always be obstacles and opportunities I wouldn’t know about when I make my plans.  Does that make planning a waste of time? On the other hand, it’s kind of fun to set  goals, even if I don’t really think I’m going to get them all done. At least it’s something to shoot for. So I don’t know.  This is going to require some thought.

In entirely unrelated news, some Thanksgiving weekend purchases have begun to arrive! While I was getting gifts for the family, I may (cough) have scored some nifty yarn for myself. Specifically, Space Cadet did several cool limited releases, and I managed to get in on two of them! First, they started a line called Prism Break.  The dyer says that when she is at shows, people always start with picking up bright colored skeins, then talk themselves out of the color and walk away with gray yarns. So she decided to mix the rainbow with gray.  She has full skeins of the different colors with gray, but did a limited release of mini skein sets – I got one! For some reason, I love mini-skeins, so I was pretty jazzed about this one. It works out to about 250 yards of worsted weight all together – I am thinking about doing a cowl in a fairly basic pattern – maybe a little texture and easy lace stitches to see what the yarn can do 🙂

The other is a yarn set for the Flickering Light shawl. Lord knows I do not need any more shawl kits, but it was so beautiful I couldn’t resist. Plus someday when it is done, it will look pretty good with my gray and black wardrobe.  So in the queue it goes!

  1. I like to think of the things on My list of goals as being ‘desirable’ rather than ‘essential’, like qualities in a job application. It would be nice to have all the desirable things ticked off but sometimes you have other skills that weren’t listed but are equal in value.

  2. You have prompted me to revisit my 2018 goals – now I am laughing after hanging my head in shame – they were goals just for me, they didn’t affect anyone else but sadly I didn’t fulfil many. I started well and am now wondering if I can tick off a few more in the 21 days left of the year …
